DESCRIPTION Abdominal adhesions are bands of fibrous scar tissue that form on the abdominal organs, causing the organs to stick to one another or to the abdominal wall. The fibrous scarring of adhesions can be the aftereffects of peritonitis, or it can follow serious abdominal trauma.

Adhesions are fairly rare in patients who have never had abdominal surgery. In people who have had multiple abdominal surgeries, however, adhesions are common, especially if the procedures are extensive. |
In most patients, post-surgical adhesions do not produce any health problems. In a small number of people who have undergone abdominal surgery, however, the fibrous bands of adhesions block the flow of material through the intestines either completely or partially. This is called an intestinal obstruction. In even fewer cases, a portion of the bowel strangulates, or twists around a band of adhesions. This strangulation cuts off the normal blood supply to the twisted bowel and the affected portion of bowel begins to die. When this happens, the person must be taken to surgery immediately. Intestinal obstruction leads to death in about 5 percent of cases. The death rate is as high as 37 percent in people who develop strangulation. |

SYMPTOMS In most people, abdominal adhesions do not produce any symptoms. However, if adhesions cause partial intestinal obstruction that comes and goes, the person may have intermittent bouts of crampy abdominal pain.
|
When more significant intestinal obstruction develops, the following symptoms can occur: |
- Severe, crampy abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal distension (swelling of the abdomen)
- Gas and absent or infrequent bowel movements
- Signs of dehydration, including dry skin, dry mouth and tongue, severe thirst, infrequent urination, fast heart rate and low blood pressure.
|
|
A small number of people who develop a small bowel obstruction will develop strangulation of the bowel. These people typically develop severe abdominal pain, which can be either crampy or constant, and the abdomen is distended and tender even when toughed lightly. These people usually also develop signs of systemic illness, such as fever, fast heart rate and low blood pressure. |
