DESCRIPTION  Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal in the lumbar area (low back). The narrowing is usually caused by degenerative changes in the spine that occur as part of the natural aging process. As we age, the intervertebral disks lose water and height. The loss of height results in "disk bulging." The small joints in the posterior part of the spine develop osteophytes or "spurs". The posterior intervertebral ligaments (ligamentum flavum) tends to thicken. In combination, theses changes lead to a decrease in the space available to the nerve roots as they traverse and exit the spinal canal. |

Once the narrowing of the spinal canal gets to a critical point, the blood supply to the nerve roots that supply sensation and motor power to the legs becomes compromised. This compromise is usually manifested as leg pain; in more severe cases there may be numbness or weakness as well. SYMPTOMS |

Spinal stenosis does not necessarily cause symptoms. Many people can have significant stenosis on imaging studies but fail to have symptoms.
When present, symptoms may include pain or numbness in the back and/or legs, or cramping in the legs. Weakness in the legs may occur. Rarely, bowel and/or bladder problems can occur.
Symptoms are often worse with prolonged standing or walking. Symptoms may come and go, and may vary in severity when present. Bending forward or sitting increases the room in the spinal canal and may lead to reduced pain or completed relief from pain. |
